Spousal Support

The longer your marriage has lasted, the more likely the issue of spousal support (also known as “maintenance” or “alimony”) will come up during divorce proceedings. Unlike child support payments, there is no set formula for determining how much spousal support should be paid. Instead, a judge will take into consideration such matters as the length of the marriage, the health of the parties, the amount of income and property each side receives, and many other factors.

In most cases, the spousal support the judge grants is only temporary, designed to support the other spouse while he or she develops the skills necessary to become self-supporting. In some cases, however, spousal support awards can be made permanent, set to expire only upon death or remarriage. It is of vital importance that you understand the impact an award of spousal support can have on your life and your income.
